A very brief introduction (may not be used but want to have it in case)
My name is B. Ivy Woods and I write contemporary romance and romantic suspense. I’m a stay-at-home mom by day and a writer by night. My first novel was published this year and Something New is my sixth book. I’m originally from New York City, but the Washington D.C. metro area has been my home for several years now.
What is your favorite part of winter? Did you try to evoke that feeling into your story?
Fresh snow! I don’t enjoy shoveling or when it turns dirty, but I believe fresh snow is absolutely beautiful. I tried to evoke that feeling into my story and mention the weather several times. I also really love holiday movies and it takes a lot to pry me off my couch during the winter because of it.
Does writing as a part of a multi-author series make it easier for you to tell the character’s story or do you feel more constrained by the limitation?
I think it’s a mixture of both. It was nice having a predetermined location/scenery for the story, but I was constrained by having to keep the details of the location the same as the other books could make things more difficult. Another thing that was a bit difficult but a great challenge was writing a different trope from what I was used to writing. I wasn’t as familiar with the jilted bride trope until I did some research and started writing it, but I’m so happy I did.
Have your parents read your books? Or would that be too awkward for you? I couldn’t imagine my father ever reading a sex scene that I wrote!
My mom has read at least one of my books. I think if my father did, I would feel more awkward, but my mom reading my books is fine. It’s also nice when she gave her opinion on what I wrote and the fact that she liked it warmed my heart. Although I have to admit, I wondered if she said she liked it because she has to (as my mom haha), but she confirmed that she really did enjoy it.
Have you ever gone on a writing retreat? Or do you simply stay in the confines of your own home? Or perhaps you have a she-shed?
My plan was to go on a writing retreat this year, but coronavirus happened so I’ve been forced to stay home. I have an office that I do a lot of my writing in, but honestly I find places all over my home to write. I’m hoping that next year looks better for everyone to be healthy, able to be together, and travel to different locations.
Did you edit anything out of this book that you really loved but it just didn’t work for this story? Can you tell us or are you saving it for a bonus?
I didn’t edit anything out of the book, but I was debating writing a bonus scene that could be shared with my newsletter subscribers!
With this series taking place in the winter, did you do anything special to get in the winter mood per se, or did you write the story during the winter?
I love candles and they played a huge role in getting me in the mental space to write this story. I alternated between using one candle that smelled like a mountain lodge and another that smelled sugar cookies to set the mood in my office. I also played soft music that helped me with my concentration on the words I needed to write for this manuscript.
