What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?
Oh I’m a man of so many hats. I swear. I’m always dabbling in something different. My favorite thing to do is just hang out with my kids and watch movies. We watch a lot of horror movies. When I’m not doing that, I’m usually reading or creating my own teasers or book covers. I swear I never sit idle. I’m always working on something.
What is the first book to make you cry?
I don’t think a book has ever made me cry. I had a really rough upbringing and cried a lot as a kid so as an adult I have a hard time crying. Sometimes I want to, but I just can’t. One movie that almost made me cry was Warrior with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte. I think it was the alcoholic father and the relationship Tom Hardy had with him that touched me. Along those same lines, there’s one song that always chokes me up a little. The song Walk a Little Straighter by Billy Currington is a difficult song to listen to.
What would you choose as your mascot/avatar?
Ha! I think my mascot, or spirit animal, would have to be some kind of monkey. Not a spider monkey because I have no interest in throwing my shit at people, but maybe the bonobo monkey. It’s said that they are like the horniest creatures on the planet. They have a ridiculous amount of sex. I’m not saying I have sex anywhere near that often, but it’s on my mind 24/7. It has to be. I write about it all the time!
What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
I think I do a pretty good job when writing characters of the opposite sex. My Maybe Mandy books were my first journey into the deep waters of the female mind. You guys really are so much deeper than most guys. We’re pretty simple, really. We just want to eat, sleep, watch sports, maybe play some video games, and fuck. Give us those things and we’ll be fine. Women though. Damn. You guys are deep. If I truly understood women, I’d never argue with my wife, but the truth is, I don’t. But I think Mandy (and my other female characters) are pretty damn real. I love Mandy. If I weren’t married, I’d totally hook up with her.
How do you select the names of your characters?
I honestly have no idea. Names just come to me. It’s rare that I’ll research names or look names up online. I’ve only done that a few times and that was when I needed to find a name that made sense when writing about a specific country or a time in history. Tron probably wouldn’t be a name that would work well in story about Mesopotamia…not that I’m writing a Mesopotamian erotica lol.
Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
I’ve only done that in my erotic horror books. I write erotic romance/comedy/poetry/sci-fi dystopian under the name Chris Genovese, but I’ve separated my dark fantasy and erotic thriller/horror books and used the pen name Carver Pike for those. In my Carver Pike horror books, I have tied them all together in a very loose way. Those of you who’ve read A Foreign Evil: Diablo Snuff 1, Redgrave, and Shadow Puppets: Scarecrows of Minnow Ranch may have picked up on what I’m talking about.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
That seriously varies. I write a lot of short stories and novellas. A Climax for Christmas took me one day to write. I had a full 8-hours free so I sat and didn’t move until the book was finished. I spent the next day just fixing it up. I’d say that on average it probably takes me a couple of weeks minimum if I can find the time to write. That translates to a few months in real time. When I’m on vacation (and the kids are in school) I can usually finish at least an erotic novella.
Have you ever participated in Movember?
I don’t know what Movember is so no. Is that like NaNoWriMo? I haven’t participated in that either. Hold on, I’m going to go look up Movember. I’m assuming it has nothing to do with cows (which is what I think of when I say that word out loud) and maybe it has something to do with dancing? Like move…ember? Like move your body? Oh…I was way off. According to Wikipedia it’s when dudes grow mustaches in the month of November to raise awareness for men’s health issues. That sounds like a great event to participate in. I’d never heard of it. Maybe I’ll try that out. I kind of always have a mustache and beard. I hate shaving.
What are you currently reading?
Believe it or not, I’m not an erotica fan. I write it and I love writing it, but I think I’d go crazy if I spent every second of the day in an aroused state. I already think enough with my little head and since I write this stuff so much, I’m hard half the day. So, when I’m not writing, I usually read horror or dark fantasy. Lately I’ve been into the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. I’m on the second book now. I read the first one and was blown away. If you like George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) then I think you’d like this guy’s books. No dragons or elves or anything like that. Just badass assassins and witches and mages. I’ve been listening to book two, Shadow’s Edge, in audiobook as I drive back and forth to work every day. I never seem to have time to actually crack open a book anymore so it’s great being able to listen to audiobooks. I love reading, but I rarely have quiet time now.
If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
Go ahead and use that scholarship to go to school instead of joining the military. Trust me, little Chris. And don’t be afraid to masturbate. It really is no big deal and you’ll do that shit often when you get older!
