Investigative Crime Shows that are also Podcasts

Did you know that some of your favorite investigative, true crime shows are also podcasts?  For me this was game changing. When my cousin told me that Dateline was one of them I had to check it out, especially because as much as I love the show it’s virtually impossible to watch with my son around and I know I’m not the only one. Now I can just pop in hundreds of cases into my ears and not worry about the gory details being exposed to little ears that aren’t quite ready for all of that.

Podcasts help me be more productive at work and while cleaning, they may also soothe me to sleep. Some of these narrators have voices that can work wonders to calm my brain. I’ve tracked down six investigative podcasts for you that are also available to watch, either way you decide to consume them, I have no doubt you will love them.

Investigative crime shows are practically an American household staple, but did you know that a lot of them also broadcast as podcasts?

48 Hours

This is a classic investigative crime that has been on since 1988, the journalists have helped crack cold cases and get the wrongfully convicted out of prison. They release new episodes on Tuesdays and there are so many episodes already loaded onto your favorite podcast platform that you would have to binge for quite some time to listen to them all.

Marcia Clark Investigates The First 48

Marcia Clark is a former prosecutor and defense attorney, and her investigative show began in 2018. She takes a deep dive into the first 48 hours of a case and goes over how it was handled to highlight how the case was handled. As any true crime lover knows, the first 48 hours are crucial to an investigation. She has covered some well known cases, including the Casey Anthony case. This docu-series has only seven episodes and they are all available to listen to right now!

Forensic Files

This is a cult classic, in fact it’s so loved and soothing that my sister and cousin love to fall asleep to the narrator’s voice because it’s so soothing. Forensic Files delves into the science behind solving crimes. I saw an episode where forensics used genetic testing through a genealogy testing site to track down a killer, and I know that has been utilized quite a bit to solve cases in recent years. New episodes are released on Monday and Thursdays.

Snapped: Women Who Murder

Did you know that Snapped recently celebrated their 500th episode? What makes it unique if you don’t already know is that it’s the only show that focuses on women killers. One of the most memorable episodes for me was on where the woman put the man in a vat of acid. I can’t remember much else about the episode, but that will always stick with. They publish new episodes every Saturday, they just started publishing them back at the end of August so it will be easy to get caught up and have a weekly dose of women killers.

Dateline NBC

My most binged investigative podcast, filled with double lives and affairs. Dateline has been on since ‘92, so not quite as long as 48 Hours, but it’s definitely earned its spot as a staple in the true crime genre. Lester Holt, Andrea Canning, Josh Mankiewicz, Keith Morrison and Dennis Murphy all host and each do an awesome job, but I’m partial to Lester myself. Three episodes are published weekly for Dateline, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Cold Case Files

If you were a fan of cold case files and were upset when they quit airing new episodes a few years ago, look no further because you can live each case again, audibly every Tuesday when they publish a new case. Every episode takes you through unsolved cases, talking to the original players on the case and reenactments, which may not translate well to audio, but it’s still a great listen!

I hope your ears are ready for all of these investigations! If I’ve missed any of these, please let me know and I will add them to my list!
