ADAM

At forty-three, I’ve experienced my fair share of love and even betrayal.

That very same heartbreak gave me the gift of two adolescent boys, and I owe it to them to be a good example.

But the proverbial girl next door has captured my attention and has me craving things I shouldn’t want. Not with Everly. It’s almost shameful how much of my headspace is consumed by someone half my age.

EVERLY

I may be young, but I’m no stranger to failed relationships and heartbreak. In fact, the last time I fell in love, it almost killed me.

But everything about Adam, the sexy and much older man next door, draws me in. I don’t care that he’s nearly twice my age or that he has two young sons. I would do just about anything to make him mine.

Can I convince him that age is just a number, or will he shut me out because he’s also my uncle’s good friend?

Quick Bio

Growing up the eldest of three boys in Canton, Michigan was chaotic, and college couldn’t come soon enough. I graduated with an accounting degree and became a CPA at a top firm in Downtown Detroit. Years later, I found myself in an unhappy marriage, unbeknownst to me. I got a divorce. Crazy how I ended up doing what my father should have done many moons ago… Except, I don’t think my mother cheated like my then-wife did with our oldest son’s soccer coach. Anyway, I’ve been doing the single-parent thing for a few years. I have primary custody of my two boys, who spend time with their mom and stepdad on weekends. My ex has obviously moved on. Meanwhile, I’ve been gun shy in love, settling for flings here and there. After all, I’m protecting my sons and me.

What advice would you give to other single fathers?

Be present. Your children need you the most during their formative years, especially if there is only one parent in the household. Listen to them, even when they aren’t talking. They are always communicating, even in their actions.

What’s the hardest part of parenting on your own?

Not having a partner to act as a buffer. Single parents have to be twice as patient. The phrase “be slow to anger” has never been more crucial in my life than as a single dad.

What’s a skill every single dad should/what tool should he have in his arsenal?

Math (kids get ungodly amounts of homework for some reason) and cooking (can’t order pizza every night).

What’s your favorite thing to do with you kid(s)?

When it’s not winter, I love hopping on the bike trail with my boys. When it’s cold out, we enjoy going to the arcade with an obscene amount of game tokens.

If you could teach you child(ren) one thing what would it be?

My boys are good boys, so I know they will grow up and make their old man proud. But if I could teach them anything, it would be: “Push through all obstacles and keep your eyes on that goalpost. Don’t let anyone impede your dreams.”

Anything else we should know?

No one’s perfect, so I don’t expect my sons to be. I just hope they never find out that I’ve had my eye on someone half my age for the past three years.
