Romance author, Maya Hughes, stops by HEA Novel Thoughts for an exclusive interview where discuss her writing and thoughts on Black History Month.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?
Reading, spend time with my kids, watching my favorite shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I also try to go to the gym as often as possible.

What is the most recent book to make you cry?
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. I’ve reread it about three times. Still guts me every single time.

What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal? Why?
Cheetah. Not only is it like one of the fastest creatures out there, they have the ability to hyper focus for short periods of time and manage to achieve a lot.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
Dialogue. Men think and react differently than women, so I usually do a lot of research–read books written in male POV, watch movies or TV shows—just to make sure I get it right.

How do you select the names of your characters?
Google is my friend. And the Bible. I always find it hard to come up with a name from the top of my head.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
No. I’ve never tried that.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
About four to five months for the first draft, then about two months to complete editing.

What does Black History Month Mean to you?
For me, it means acknowledging and celebrating black men and women accomplishments and achievements.

What are you currently reading?
The ARC of Gods & Monsters by Saffron A. Kent

If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
Breathe in. Breathe out. Everything is going to be okay.

Do you have any tips or hacks that help you stay organized in life, writing or social media?
I work full time, so what I tend to do is write whenever I have a day off or two. I try as much as I can to keep up with social media while on the train on the way to and from work.

Do you relate more to one of your characters than the others?
I think I relate to all of my characters. I try to add something, a character trait or flaw of mine while developing my characters.
