What happens when two strangers hook-up on a tropical island? What about when they find out that their actually part of the bridal party for the destination wedding they’ve both been invited to? That’s what Love Under Protection is all about. From the islands of Hawaii to the streets of NYC, Harley and Raylynn made writing this story a lot of fun with some interesting twists and turns.

Aubree Valentine stopped for an interview and to share an exclusive excerpt of her most recent book in the Madison 425 series.

HEA Novel Thoughts: What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?

Aubree Valentine: Reading. Or crafting something – usually with power tools.

HEA: What is the most recent book to make you cry?

Aubree: Hmm. That’s a tough one. I actually haven’t read a good ugly cry book in a while.

HEA: What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal? Why?

Aubree: My spirit animal would probably be a dog – specifically a pitbull/lab mix because I’m loyal, sometimes to a fault and playful. I’m pretty headstrong and have no problem being assertive and putting my foot down especially when it’s business related. Because of that, I can also be a little misunderstood.

HEA: What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Aubree: When I first started writing, it was making sure my leading men were not too soft and over the top feminine.

HEA: Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Aubree: There’s always a hidden egg or two.

HEA: How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Aubree: On average – between two weeks to a month. Since I write pretty much full time, I’m able to buckle down and focus. When I get lost in the words, it’s hard to stop.

HEA: If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?

Aubree: Learn the art of the word ‘no’.

HEA: Do you have any tips or hacks that help you stay organized in life, writing or social media?

Aubree: I live by my planner and task list. Outlining my goals for the day/week/month – keep me accountable.

Aubree: Do you relate more to one of your characters than the others?

HEA: There’s a piece of me in each of my characters but I probably relate the most to Olivia from Love Under Construction the most. We both live with anxiety and have learned to conquer it. Liv also lost her dad in her twenties, much like I did.

HEA: If a reader discovers your books today, where would you recommend they start reading?

Aubree: Start with Hot Cop, most definitely. All of my books from that point forward sort of tie together (though they are all standalones).

“Hmm. Who are the newlyweds here? Did you two run off and tie the knot without us?” Jameson’s voice booms behind us, and Raylynn practically jumps from my arms.

“Don’t shy away because of us,” Olivia adds.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Raylynn plays coy, and I grunt.

There’s no hiding my amusement. “Yeah, nothing to see here.”

“Smooth,” Raylynn mumbles under her breath.

Jameson shakes his head. “Well, if you’re both done with nothing, then let’s get to dinner. Shall we?”

I extend my arm. “Lead the way.”

Raylynn slips her arm around mine, and we follow the two lovebirds to Hoku’s.

Our table is ready when we arrive, and the hostess escorts us to the back patio that overlooks the ocean. I fully expect Olivia to take a seat near her husband, but she quickly pulls Raylynn to her side.

“Guess we’re sitting together,” Jameson states the obvious, taking the chair across from Olivia. “Don’t try to hold my hand or grab my junk. Keep your hands to yourself,” he deadpans.

“God, you’re such a fucker. Is your junk tender? Too much action? Can’t handle it?”

Olivia blushes, Raylynn snickers.

“Never.” Jameson shakes his head.

If these two have some kind of plan to keep me from seducing Raylynn during dinner, they’ve clearly underestimated my talents. I’ve got no problem playing footsie with her.

For good measure, I lean back with the menu in my hands, pretending to be giving it a good look over while I slowly move my foot in her direction. Over the top of my menu, I notice her startle when I make contact. She squirms in her seat and I raise a brow. Jameson and Olivia are oblivious at the moment.

It’s me who nearly blows our cover when she unexpectedly reaches under the table and grabs my leg.

The humor dancing in her eyes has my cock beating against my zipper.

“You okay over there, man?” Jameson eyes me suspiciously.

Raylynn is ready to burst out in laughter.

“Peachy.” I play it off by taking another drink of the water on the table.
