HEA Novel Thoughts is excited to have romance Author, B.B. Reid, stop by and chat about her writing and her thoughts on Black History month. She is the author of the hit enemies to lovers Fear me and I personally can’t wait to get my hands on The Peer and the Puppet!!
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?
I’m an avid reader, and it comes with the territory, but I’m pretty sure it takes up ninety percent of my free time…and my study time when I was in college. I occasionally binge on favorite TV shows, and I love gaming, usually the first-shooter kind like Call of Duty. My best friend and I love road trips and we’ve been indulging ourselves more often. I’m pretty much a part-time couch potato.
What is the most recent book to make you cry?
I don’t cry easily even with tearjerkers. Actually, I avoid them because I hate crying but man…Transcendence by Shay Savage got me good.
What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal? Why?
Definitely a tiger. Not only are they my favorite animal, but they’re solitary, territorial, brutal yet graceful, powerful, daring, unpredictable, and so beautiful—everything I am and aspire to be.
What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
I can’t say it’s been difficult. When I question a male character’s actions, I never say “Would a man really do this?” It’s always “Would he, the character, really do this?” This goes for my female characters too. My characters are who they are, and I don’t reject them. Writing is my chance to imagine, and I take full advantage of that. I don’t always let real life dictate how and what I write.
How do you select the names of your characters?
Sometimes I choose the name of someone I know or met or happened to see or I browse those baby name websites.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Anywhere from two to six months. Sometimes the characters won’t shut up and other times they stop talking to me for weeks at a time.
What does Black History Month Mean to you?
I’m ecstatic to have a month-long recognition of Black history and our accomplishments, but there isn’t a day I don’t celebrate, give thanks, and have pride for the achievements of African-Americans. I carry Black history in my heart, but I also have the honor of wearing it on my skin. It’s with me every day, so to me Black History Month is a chance for everyone, no matter race or background, to remember it’s a part of them as well.
What are you currently reading?
I’m on book five of the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas and after that I’ll be diving into The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
I would love to realize I was meant to be an author before I racked up on those student loans. 😉 I kid. I don’t regret my business degree, but sometimes I wonder, ‘what if I’d started writing sooner?’ Everything happens when it’s meant to though.
Do you have any tips or hacks that help you stay organized in life, writing or social media?
No, but if you have some tips, I’d love to hear it. I’m fifty percent organized and fifty percent chaos. I organize when needed, but I function just as well playing it by ear. I don’t believe you have to be completely organized to be successful. Stick to what works for you. I usually find that failing kills my motivation even more after trying to control everything that happens and when.
Do you relate more to one of your characters than the others?
Not really. Each of my characters inherit a piece of me, and it’s always interesting when the parts that people loved or hated came from me.
