Meet male romance author, JD Hawkins we discuss his writing style, his spirit animal and what he is doing when he isn't writing.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?

It depends. I love doing MMA. It usually (up until my current injury) took most of my time other than my writing. I probably spent 10 hours per week at the gym and another 10 hours on the couch recovering. Other than that, I love spending time the beach. I used to surf a lot and really want to get back to it.

What is the first book to make you cry?

Hmm… I’m not a big crier. I don’t remember the last time I cried in a movie, not to mention a book.

What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

According to a spirit animal quiz, my spirit animal is the Owl. They say that I have a deep connection with wisdom and intuitive knowledge and when the spirit of the Owl guides me, I can see the true reality and see beyond illusion and deceit. Whatever, I’d actually prefer a Tiger or something cooler.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

The internal dialogues. And when the sex scene is from her POV. I’m lucky to have two amazing (female) editors who often rewrite whole scenes for me. I wouldn’t be able to do it without their help.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Brainstorming with my editors. Nothing mystical about it, we just come up with names that we feel fit the characters. It’s very subjective with names so we don’t sweat too much over it. It’s usually a quick decision.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Nope. But that’s a good idea. I’ll definitely think about it in my WIP.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

From brainstorming to hitting publish, 3 months on average.

Have you ever participated in Movember?

Never. My mustache looks horrible by itself (without the beard). It’s blonde. And my hair is dark brown.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading a nonfiction called Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Enlightenment by Robert Wright. It’s a new and brilliant NYT Bestseller. It’s basically a journey through psychology, philosophy, and lots of meditation to show how Buddhist principles and practice can have a critical role on the way to moral clarity and enduring happiness.

If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?

This is hard because I’m currently in a really good place in my life so I’m not sure I would have changed anything in the past. Maybe I would tell myself to do exactly what I did? I don’t know.

A general advice for life would be to listen to my gut feelings more, especially about people. I’d tell myself to distance myself from negative people early on and not give people so many chances. When you see someone behaving badly to other people, run away. Because you’re next in line.
