Meet male romance author, Daryl Banner, we discuss his writing style, his spirit animal and what he is doing when he isn't writing.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t wearing your author hat?

I am an avid gamer. I also love playing the piano, composing music in my spare time, and watching TV shows with my mom.

What is the first book to make you cry?

I can’t remember the first one, honestly. I was a pretty emo kid, so I’m sure a lot of books affected me pretty strongly. It might have been The Black Cauldron that made me first cry.

What would you choose as your mascot/avatar?
Probably a cat. I like cats.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

I honestly never thought of writing women as any more difficult than men. In my perspective, I’m not writing genders; I’m writing characters. No matter who they are, my duty is just to tell their story with as much integrity and clarity as possible.

How do you select the names of your characters?

In my contemporary / romance series, I usually go for names I don’t hear as often as others. I tend to veer toward names that both sound nice when you say it, but also look good on the page. In my dystopian series – like Outlier, or like The Beautiful Dead – I’ll usually use modified versions of normal names so it carries a sense of familiarity, but is still new.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

All the time. My books are riddled with Easter eggs, tiny details that become important things later in the books, and a few things still sitting in plain sight that no one to date has seemed to notice or point out. It gives me a private joy.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Greatly depends on the genre. My contemporary romances take me 1 to 2 months for a full-length, while my dystopian Outlier series (the novels of which are up to four times longer in length) can take me about 3 to 4 months.

What are you currently reading?

I seem to have less and less time to read for pleasure lately. Honestly, I’ve been recently reading my own Outlier novels for the purposes of research and preparation for the upcoming fourth book Outlier: Beyond Oblivion, which I’m almost finished developing. I think the last book I read for pleasure was A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin. Before that was either Haunted or Damned by Chuck Palahniuk.

If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would it be?

I wish I was more confident as a teen and in college. I always second-guessed everything and had a hard time standing up for myself. I’d tell younger-me to go big, to be daring, and to speak up more.
